18 Natural Herbs For Prostate Health

Are you struggling with an enlarged prostate?

Have difficulty peeing? Is your physical intimacy suffering because of prostate issues or ED?

Maybe you are experiencing dribbling of urine, painful ejaculation, pain or burning urination, sudden erectile dysfunction. Not to mention the emotional toll it has on your mental state. Or the long-term effects prostate issues can have on you physically.

My Story

You need to understand…I am not a doctor or health coach. But I’ve dealt with prostate issues and I discovered something that works for me. I can’t guarantee it will for you, but here is my story:

I hit my late 50’s I noticed I had trouble peeing. I was also having trouble in the bedroom. It wasn’t a problem of getting excited or having an erection, it was taking me longer to have an orgasm.

I wasn’t too concerned but my wife convinced me to go see my doctor.

He did a prostate exam and notified me that my prostate was slightly enlarged.

He recommended a pharmaceutical drug. I explained that I had reservations about taking medications and preferred something natural.

Since he knows me pretty well, he recommended a handful of herbs, plants, and supplements. After a few months, I started noticing gradual improvements.

The only problem was, I was spending a fortune on each herb he recommended. I knew there had to be a single source that contained everything I wanted. Eventually, I found that source. I’ll get to that in a bit.

First, I want to talk about the 18 herbs that work to reduce the size of my prostate, help me have a better orgasm, and make me feel more alert and focused.

Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate

Prostatitis is an infection or inflammation of the prostate gland. It can either be acute or chronic.

Acute infections usually occur quickly, causing more severe symptoms. This is usually brought about by bacterial infection.

The major symptoms of acute prostatitis are:

  • An urgent need to pee with little urine coming out
  • High fever
  • Chills
  • Trouble peeing
  • Pain around the base of your penis or behind your scrotum
  • Cloudy urine

Chronic infections differ from acute infections. Symptoms are usually similar to those of a urinary tract infection. Therefore, there may be pain, swelling, burning, and discomfort. This causes the prostate to swell much larger than normal.

Prevention Over Medicine

Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and taking care of our emotional wellbeing are all important elements of living an optimal level of health.

Medical experts and research have confirmed repeatedly that the lifestyle choices we make are crucial for healthy aging, and preventing various diseases.

When it comes to healthcare, men tend to see doctors less and do not pay as much attention to their possible health concerns as women do. They can often go years between doctors’ visits—missing valuable opportunities for screening and detection of possible physical diseases.

Top 3 Health Concerns of Men

We live in a society where treatment rules over prevention, where the medical community shuns (or hides) natural treatments, and where consumers have to take matters into their own hands if they want to be educated about all of their options.

When it comes to your health, you need to know that you’re not at the mercy of your genetics and you don’t have to rely on drug treatments for everything.

You also can’t rest on your laurels until something bad happens – you need to take a preventative approach to your health while addressing any issues that have already crept up.

A recent study by WebMD concluded that the top 3 health concerns with men are:

  1. Heart Disease
  2. Colon Cancer
  3. Prostate and Erectile Problems

Having regular checkups is important for early detection, but there is one issue that has a higher probability of prevention than the others: prostate problems.

In this article, we discuss 18 natural herbs and plants that will prevent prostate issues and even help with ED.

With that in mind, here’s my list:

Ingredient #1: Saw Palmetto

According to Healthline, in one small 12-week study, men who took 1,000 mg daily of saw palmetto oil enriched with beta-sitosterol experienced significant improvements in BPH (the technical term for enlarged prostate) symptoms compared with those who took unenriched saw palmetto oil. (Source)

A 24-week study found that taking 320 mg of saw palmetto decreased symptoms of BPH and improved urinary flow, quality of life, and sexual function. (Source)

Why It Works

Most health professionals believe it works by reducing inflammation and regulating testosterone levels.

Ingredient #2: Plant Sterol

Sterols are substances that are found in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. They are generally used to reduce cholesterol.

According to the American Association for Cancer Research, animal and plant sterols may play a critical role in prostate cancer formation/progression or prevention.

Why It Works

Studies indicate cholesterol significantly promotes the proliferation of prostate cancer cells. So, by reducing cholesterol, we can promote healthy prostate function.

Plant Sterol is a natural way to lower cholesterol making it a good choice for prostate health.

Ingredient #3: Pygeum Africanum

The bark of the African cherry tree is used to produce the herbal extract Pygeum. African plums, or Prunus africanum, are another name for this tree.

A study in 2012 suggested that pygeum could help slow the growth of actual prostate cells. (Source)

Why It Works

Pygeum acts on androgen receptors, which ultimately control prostate growth. (Source)

Ingredient #4: Red Raspberry

Plants of the red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) have been traditionally used as medicines.

According to a review of animal studies, raspberries and raspberry extracts may reduce your risks of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. (Source)

Why It Works

Chemicals in red raspberry may have anti-oxidant effects and reduce blood vessel tension. They might also cause muscles to contract or relax and have been used to ease labor and delivery because of its sedative properties.

Ingredient #5: Annona Muricata

The leaves of Annona muricata have been used by traditional healers for ethnomedicinal purposes to treat several diseases, including cancer, inflammation, diabetes, liver diseases, and abscesses.

Why It Works

The plant extract Anona muricata has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

Ingredient #6: Green Tea

Green tea has been consumed and hailed for its health benefits for centuries globally but has only recently gained popularity in the United States.

Green tea is made by steaming young tea leaves at high temperatures, which stops fermentation and preserves the active constituent, called catechins, which are powerful antioxidants.

Why It Works

Scientists have discovered that the main ingredient in green tea called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and its metabolites have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer properties. These properties seem to shrink the prostate and kill cancer cells.

Ingredient #7: Cat’s Claw

Cat’s Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is an herb from the Amazon rainforest that has been used for centuries by indigenous people as a cure-all. Numerous studies have shown that it has antioxidant properties and is able to enhance the immune system.

Before you take Cat’s Claw, talk with your doctor and make sure it won’t interfere with any medication you may be taking.

Why It Works

The most important benefit of Cat’s Claw is its ability to reduce inflammation by blocking the activation of the NF-kB protein, which controls the expression of genes related to inflammation.

Ingredient #8: Broccoli Leaf

The beneficial component of broccoli that helps protect against prostate cancer is sulforaphane glucosinolate. Broccoli contains the highest concentration of this compound, with Brussels sprouts and cabbage close behind. Other cruciferous vegetables contain lesser amounts.

Broccoli helps to fight cancer by helping to kill cancer cells as well as stop them from growing further.

Broccoli also helps to boost your immune system so that you can get rid of colds and flu symptoms quickly.

Why It Works

It helps make the prostate stronger by strengthening its cells, which in turn improves urination patterns. Broccoli leaf also works to protect against prostate cancer by balancing estrogen levels.

Ingredient #9: Tomato

Lycopene, a red pigment found in tomatoes and other fruits, such as watermelon and pink grapefruit, has been shown to have antioxidant properties.

Antioxidants are substances that help prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals — molecules produced during normal metabolism that may cause tissue damage if they’re present in excess amounts.

Why It Works

Lycopene also has some anti-inflammatory properties and may protect against cancer developing or spreading.

Ingredient #10: Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle belongs to the family of Urticaceae, which has over 40 species, mostly found in North America and Europe but some are also found in Africa and Asia.

Stinging nettle is also known for its antihistamine properties.

The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that stinging nettle roots appear to help relieve the symptoms of enlarged prostate. (Source)

Why It Works

Nettle has anti-inflammatory properties that may make it useful for treating painful joint conditions and other inflammatory problems such as allergies.

Ingredient #11: Maitake

Maitake mushrooms are known to have anti-cancer properties, especially when it comes to prostate cancer.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Maitake has been used for prostate problems, as well as other health conditions.

Maitake is thought to have anti-cancer properties and can help the immune system. Some studies show that it can help to lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels, as well as reduce blood cholesterol.

Why It Works

Researchers from the University of Chicago conducted a series of experiments and found that maitake activates both T cells and natural killer cells, which fight cancerous growths by killing off infected cells.

Ingredient #12: Reishi

There are several medicinal mushrooms, mainly in Asian countries, that have historically been used for treating infections. In recent years, Reishi mushrooms have also been used to treat cancer and pulmonary diseases.

Despite being known as an adaptogenic herb, reishi is also known for helping with many problems that occur during menopause and aging.

Why It Works

Molecular compounds found in the mushroom may increase the activity of a type of white blood cell called natural killer cells in cancer patients. (Source)

Ingredient #13: Shitake

According to research published online Sept. 4, 2019, by the International Journal of Cancer, regular consumption of mushrooms may lower prostate cancer risk.

Researchers report that men who consumed mushrooms once or twice a week – an average of about 3 ounces per serving – had an 8% lower risk of prostate cancer compared with those who did not consume mushrooms. For men who ate mushrooms three or more times a week, the risk was 17% lower. (Source)

Why It Works

Researchers found that Shitake polysaccharides inhibit prostate cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, and may have the potential for use as a chemopreventive tool against prostate cancer.

Ingredient #14: Pumpkin Seed

The combination of pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto oil, as well as pumpkin seed oil alone, may improve the symptoms of BPH. (Source)

Why It Works

Pumpkin seeds contain phytochemicals that may reduce dihydrotestosterone’s effects on the prostate. Additionally, they may inhibit the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone.

Zinc plays a crucial role in prostate function. An individual with a normal prostate has the highest levels of zinc in their body.

Ingredient #15: Goldenseal

Goldenseal is a herb found in North America. Goldseal was traditionally used by Native Americans to treat a variety of health problems, including sore or itchy eyes, mouth ulcers, and even tuberculosis.

Research now shows it helps prevent urinary tract infections, increase general immune support, and antibacterial support.

Why It Works

Test tube studies have shown that the substance called berberine in goldenseal kills bacteria and fungi. These antibiotic properties reduce inflammation and boost white blood cells to fight disease.

Ingredient #16: Buchu

Buchu may be used to treat ailments associated with the reproductive system. It is used as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent for urinary tract infections and for infections of the urethra and prostate.

Why It Works

Buchu has many direct and indirect effects on the reproductive system in several ways:

  • It acts as a diuretic
  • It has anti-oxident properties
  • It is an anti-microb
  • It works as an anti-inflammatory agent

One caution: Buchu plant contains diosphenol, which is toxic at high doses and should be used at low levels for most uses. (Source)

Ingredient #17: Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) is a perennial herb that’s native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. It contains mucilage, which is the gum or glue-like solution extracted from the root.

Marshmallow root has typically been used to treat coughs, but recent studies have found it is beneficial as a diuretic. A diuretic helps flush out excess fluid from the body. It also helps to cleanse the kidneys and bladder.

According to other research, the extract may benefit overall urinary health. Based on a 2016 study, marshmallow has a soothing effect on the urinary tract and can reduce inflammation and irritation. (Source)

Why It Works

It works by healing the urinary tract and reducing inflammation and relieving pain.

Ingredient #18: Gravel Root

Gravel root is a native of the North American continent, growing from southern Canada through Florida, mostly in wet, wooded areas. Native American culture has a long history of using gravel root.

It has been known (and used) in the following ways:

  • Break down gall stones
  • Dissolve kidney stones
  • Relieve arthritis
  • Heal gout
  • Lower fever
  • Treat urinary track infections

Why It Works

Gravel root, as most of the other herbs, works by reducing swelling and inflammation.
